Master (Shihan) Steven Allen

We teach martial arts the way they were intended

The martial arts are about honour and self-cultivation.  We teach our students to strive for mind, body and spirit balance – a quest that has motivated martial artists since antiquity – including Daoist priests, Buddhist monks, bodyguards, soldiers, Chinese Medicine Doctors, and everyday people like you.

Many people are drawn to the martial arts to get fit, rehabilitate injuries and learn self-defence, while others also hope to use the arts to increase self-awareness and spiritual enlightenment. Sadly, they often stop participating in a class because most or all of these expectations haven’t been met.

At DharmaWay Dojo we guarantee you will learn martial arts the way they were intended. We have years of experience treating and rehabilitating injuries and helping others to heal with Chinese medicine and martial arts. You will learn safely, efficiently, and actually experience that elusive thing called Qi – then direct it for healing and martial power.

In Sanskrit Dharma means the law or the truth, dojo is a Japanese word meaning school or place of learning, so DharmaWay Dojo is the place where the true way of martial arts are taught.

We can tailor a martial arts programme just for you

You might be drawn to the martial arts to experience the life-changing journey you have seen in movies or read about in books and know in your heart to be true. We want to reach out to people just like you, who have always wanted to learn about these arts but don’t have the time – or maybe you don’t think you have the level of fitness needed, or feel self-conscious in large classes.

Perhaps you are already in a class but the instruction is not reaching you on the mind, body, spirit level you thought it would.

At DharmaWay Dojo you can experience learning martial arts completely, you can learn how each posture and form promotes meditation; will learn to control your body by learning to understand your own mind. You will see how the healing and martial aspects support each other – and how it’s all a metaphor for experiencing the interactions of yin and yang.

You don’t need to struggle when you have the right teacher

Steven Allen, a Chinese Medicine practitioner, acupuncturist, herbalist, and manual therapist is also a Master of the arts he teaches.  He can save you countless years of struggling to understand Tai Chi, Bagua, Hsing I, or Karate by his deep understanding of eastern culture and practices.

A Buddhist lay teacher with over 30 years’ experience in teaching adults, Master Allen is a consummate professional. He holds lineages in Old Yang Style Tai Chi, Cheng Bagua Zhang, Hebei and Shanxi Hsing I Chuan, and the oldest known form of Shorin Ryu Karate from the Mastsumura lineage where he holds a Shihan Certificate and a fifth Dan. He holds the equivalent of 7th Dan, black belt, in the Chinese Internal Martial Arts.

One-to-one teaching or small groups

We teach one-on-one lessons, or in small groups of 3 to 5. Bookings are available for Monday through Fridays 9 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. You can come to us in Halswell (the Westlake area) or we can come to you.

We can accommodate any age or fitness level, and have many students who have successfully rehabilitated injuries using these forms in the proper way. We teach students from 8 years old up into their 80s. We can teach you both the healing aspects and self-defence components of these beautiful arts – in fact, it’s impossible to separate one from the other.
